when Brewing Beer, how is the process affected by lack of a fermentation lock?
I’m brewing beer in my living room, but I don’t have a fermentation lock. how does this affect my beer?
A fermentation lock can be as simple as a balloon or condom over the mouth of a carboy or a tube run from the carboy to a container of water. Try to use one. You don’t want dust in your beer, especially if the dust contains wild yeasts or bacteria to foul up the fermentation. You want oxygen kept out too. Once fermentation with the proper yeast gets going, you will get a little protection from the foam and the layer of carbon dioxide on top of your wort. However, I would not rely on that. You are more apt to get malt vinegar than lambic.
